Bending of bilayers with general initial shapes

چکیده

Abstract We present a simple discrete formula for the elastic energy of a bilayer. The formula is convenient for rapidly computing equilibrium configurations of actuated bilayers of general initial shapes. We use maps of principal curvatures and minimum-curvature direction fields to analyze configurations. We find good agreement between the computations and an approximate analytical solution for the case of a rectangular bilayer. For more general shapes (simple polyiamonds), we find a range of typical bending behaviors: overall bending directions along longest and shortest dimensions, inward bending at corners, curvature intensification near boundaries, and conical bending and partitioned bending zones in some cases.

A novel method for laser forming of two-step bending of a dome shaped part

In recent decades, one of the challenges in sheet metal forming was production of two-step bending surfaces without mechanical tools and external force or by a combination of heat source and mechanical tools. Forming with a heat source such as laser beam has the potential for forming arbitrary 3D shapes such as two-step bending surfaces. In this paper a novel method for laser forming of complic...

Conformal transformations of vesicle shapes

Vesicles are closed surfaces of lipid bilayers, which form already in simple binary systems of one lipid species plus water [IJ. Studies by video microscopy reveal an amazing variety of shapes, between which transformations can be induced, e.g., by changing the temperature or the osmotic conditions [2-4]. Such experiments confirm the basic theoretical idea that the bending elasticity of the bil...

Edge effects determine the direction of bilayer bending.

We elucidate the reason for preferential bending along the long edge in thin rectangular bilayers in which one of the layers is isotropically strained. While this preference has been observed previously, the physical basis for this preference has not been understood. We find that the bending direction is determined by the existence of doubly curved regions at the curled edges, which lower the e...

Synaptobrevin transmembrane domain influences exocytosis by perturbing vesicle membrane curvature.

Membrane fusion requires that nearly flat lipid bilayers deform into shapes with very high curvature. This makes membrane bending a critical force in determining fusion mechanisms. A lipid bilayer will bend spontaneously when material is distributed asymmetrically between its two monolayers, and its spontaneous curvature (C0) will influence the stability of curved fusion intermediates. Prior wo...

Chlorpromazine modulates the morphological macro- and microstructure of endothelial cells.

Chlorpromazine (CP), an amphipathic, antipsychotic agent, causes concave membrane bending in red blood cells with formation of stomatocytic shapes by modulation of the phospholipid bilayer. This study was designed to investigate the effects of CP on the shape of bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAEC) and their membranes in confluent monolayers with phase-contrast and transmission electron micro...
